An English feldspathic material that requires high temperatures to fuse. Shrinks less than kaolin and feldspar, so it is less subject to glaze defects. Helps form tough, hard glazes. Used as a source of silica, Cornish stone contains varying amounts of silica as well as potassium and sodium. In ancient China, a similar rock, called petuntze, made possible the development of porcelain.
